Every year, lakhs of students pursue engineering and graduate from college. Approximately 10 to 15 lakh engineering graduates are produced in India each year.
However, only less than one-third of them are truly employable and working in the industry. So what is it that makes engineering such a popular career choice among students?
The following are some of the reasons we believe are motivating elements in its selection:
- Several Career Opportunities
Engineering is a broad discipline with numerous specialization domains to choose from, opening up a wealth of opportunities to engineering degree holders.
A bachelor’s degree will provide a solid theoretical foundation in one of several areas, such as information technology, mechanical, civil, biotechnology, electronics & electrical engineering, and will aid in the beginning of an engineering career.
The software engineering sector is widely open to all engineering graduates of any specialization and offers several opportunities to begin and advance their careers. Skilled engineers are in high demand both domestically and internationally.
A master’s degree, a doctorate, or certifications can assist one in progressing their career in research & innovation, teaching, management, or transitioning into other domains or professions, as one can have multiple careers during their working life. - Technological discoveries, Developments and Advancements
The cars we drive, the planes we fly on, the devices we are reading this on, and many other things are designed and built by engineering firms to make human life easier.
Vaccines, electric vehicles, the internet, renewable energy technology, modern-day apps, and artificial intelligence have all altered our way of life.
Engineers and scientists collaborated to make this possible, which has had a significant impact on society and benefited mankind. - Challenging Work and Job Satisfaction
Engineers are continuous learners, always seeking new knowledge and skills. Engineering is all about solving complex problems and requires highly innovative problem-solving skills.
Engineers get to create all sorts of cool stuff, from high-performance cars, bridges & buildings to games & apps to robots & rockets.
Because engineering is a demanding field with a sense of accomplishment that follows, the engineering industry offers high levels of job satisfaction.
Working on initiatives that have a positive impact on society can be extremely significant and fulfilling for engineers. - Respect and Financial Security
After reading the preceding points, we can safely conclude that engineering has a significant impact on society and is a highly valued profession.
Engineering is also one of the most well-paying professions in the world. Engineers’ compensation is highly varied and primarily determined by the impact their work has on the company’s success.
So engineering is a rewarding career now and in the future. Entry-level engineers in the US earn between 80k and 200k dollars a year, while an experienced engineer in the top ranks of a company can make between 500k and a few million dollars a year.
Similarly, in India, entry-level engineers make between 3 lakhs and 10 lakhs per year, whereas experienced engineers in senior positions can earn between 50 lakhs and a few crores per year in total compensation.
